I am always on a mission. There is always something to be done. But, specifically in the world of farming and agriculture, I am on a mission.
I am working to educate. As a public school teacher for 27 years, I have taught many children in reading, writing, math, science and social studies through various grade levels and have even begun to teach a second generation. I also strive to educate people of all ages about agriculture. When it coincides with the school curriculum, I am sure to include it. When I have been called to substitute in other classes in a short-staffed situation, I have been able to teach lessons about agriculture to additional students. I recently had a student ask me if a barn was the same as a farm. I had never been asked that question. It was a great learning opportunity as I explained it all to him and it expanded my thinking as to what other people may be wondering. As a 4-H advisor, I have been able to mentor many members through the years and encourage members to mentor others as they grow and learn.
Educating the public is interesting and also rewarding. One great example is each summer at the county fair. It’s great to talk to the people who come through the barn. They seem to especially enjoy the baby calves. We always talk to people about our cattle. We have taught the kids to talk to people any chance they get and answer their questions. Our kids also like to offer to help people get pictures of our little calves. This past year, we had Gilbert, who only about 8 days old when the fair started. He was in a corner pen and got a lot of attention. People seemed to get a kick out of his name and that he was so little. There were lots of questions about what happens to the mothers and baby calves after the fair. Most were excited to learn that they go back home to the farm with green grass, fresh water and shade.
This blog has also been an expression of education. I want to share things that happen on the farm and give a glimpse of our life. My mission is that what you read will give you some insight and education.
