For the beauty of the earth..

The weather has really shown itself in recent weeks. We have been reminded how quickly conditions change even within a season. Since the beginning of January we have seen a fair amount of snow. The most recent event included several hours of sleet, which accumulated into a thick layer of ice. Many residents suffered power outages, we did not (this time). It made the trek to the barn, and even the mailbox, a little more treacherous. Thawing out vehicles took some time and effort.

From a farm standpoint, these cold days are good for ridding the soil of hazardous insects and other irritants naturally. The freezing and thawing cycle helps to naturally reduce compaction of the soil. Winter moisture helps replenish the water table.

The sun came out over the weekend and shone beautifully on the frozen branches and fences. They glistened in the sun. It was truly a beautiful sight to behold. Focusing on the beauty we have been given makes this cold season a little more bearable.
