The rock pile

What we knew: Having a gravel pile on our property would make it efficient and cost-saving for repairing and maintaining driveways, field entrances and culvert areas.

What we didn’t know: The gravel pile would be viewed by our children and all children who visit as the best toy ever!

It seemed like a good idea. It made so much sense. If we could have our own inventory of gravel, we could do our own maintenance and repair on our own schedule. We have trucks and tractors, so we can haul and spread the gravel ourselves. It really has worked out well for us.

We just never dreamed how much enjoyment our children would get out of a pile of rocks! From the time they were little, they could be found climbing on it, digging in it and playing around it. It has been a mountain to climb and a fort to hide behind. They might use a stick to dig down deep. They might push rocks to the top to make a peak. There have been toy trucks and tractors driving and hauling.

When we have had other kids visit to play or host an event at the farm, the kids seem to find their way out to the rock pile. Parents will wonder where the kids went while we were having a picnic, and about 99% of the time the kids were all out there. We have heard them refer to it as the best play area.

This pile of rocks that does absolutely nothing has been a great inspiration of creativity and free play. Who knew?

The simple pleasures in life. It’s nice to know they still exist.
