A New Season

I think most people think of having 4 seasons.  As a farm wife, I have 2….planting and harvest.  I think my husband has just one-the growing season.  Farmers think a little differently and as a farm wife I guess I do too.  The countdown to planting often begins as soon as harvest is over.  One year our guys started a running countdown on a dry erase board.  I have to admit I wasn’t into it as it is hard to think about planting in the middle of December!  I have learned though that as soon as the first seed is planted the clock starts ticking and the season is on.

Planting and harvest don’t have set date they start and end like the “regular” seasons. They can start early or late and go quickly or drag on forever. Lots of flexibility is key.  My husband and I have learned to seize some of the extra moments we get on rainy days and weekends to our benefit.  We recently took the kids away for a weekend getaway at a hotel to swim and hangout.  A good time for family to be together.  Years ago I decided for my own benefit that our wedding anniversary, which is in the fall, could be celebrated any rainy weekend closest to the actual day.  It had relieved the stress and disappointment of not having it on the actual day for both of us.  I remember one year it rained three weekends in a row,so my husband took me out to a nice dinner all three weekends!  Whenever it is celebrated we are just glad to be together and get to live the life we choose. Not everyone gets to be a farm couple.
